It was 5 day experience which gave me some idea of how an organic family farm works, and also some hands-on insight into what areas I particularly enjoy or have a natural tendency towards when envisioning applying my holistic nutrition degree. It also illustrated to me just how hard farmers work! These folks were going from dawn to bedtime every day of the week. Farming is not for the faint of heart.</span><br />

<span style="background-color: white;"><span style="color: #444444; font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large; line-height: 19px;">Prep day for the farmer's market. There were 3 pickers harvesting, and a couple of others assisting here and there. A wash/weigh/prep for the market person, and 2 other farm staff working with the machinery and animals. I did a mixed bag of jobs: harvested cabbage and green beans, weeded, harvested and dehydrated oat straw, washed a motherload of beets, carrots, radishes, turnips, weighed and packaged them for market, stocked the farmstand, and seeded a field with buckwheat. In the evening I was tasked to research the nutritive benefits of Lady's Slippers (a type of wild cucumber) and Portulaca/Purslane to share with the farmer's market customers. Did you know that Portulaca has the highest content of Omega 3 out of any land plant? It's delicious in a salad too.</span></span><br />

Spirits were high as we set up at a lakeside location serenaded by Motown playing from someone's truck. Beautiful to see all the things harvested yesterday looking so vibrant. Lots of friendly folks trying out the lady slipper cucumbers, rat tail radishes, and winged asparagus peas. So much respect for the land, seeds, soil, labour, and care that goes into food production - easy to forget this as a city slicker. You are required to display your organic certification at your stand and the certification process in onerous and costly. It seems backwards, shouldn't non-organic farmers have to display all the chemical fertilizers, GMO seeds, and sprays used so that we as consumers know what it is we are consuming?</span></div>

Fun to choose herbs and flowers that are delicious and colourful to "food style" with. Then off to weed for several hours. Seriously hard work, and for someone who normally feels super efficient at work, felt like a real slowpoke. Took me 2 hours to do one row of cabbage and kale! Rescued from the weeds by the biodynamic calendar which guided us to work with medicinal plants. Spent the afternoon thorn deep in seeding milk thistle, gathering calendula, and cleaning/bundling herbs gathered by one of the farmers. Amazing moments with the twin pigs when they let me stroke their heads, best eyelashes ever.</span></span></div>

Spent the rest of the day in the medicine garden gathering dandelion root and leaves, basil, yarrow, tulsi, parsley, goldenrod, coriander seeds, dill seeds, rosemary, catnip, marsh mallow, and mullein. Clarence (the dog) and Alice (the cat) assisted. Finished up with late night ATV ride out to feed the sheepdog Clyde and to check on the lambs - farm version of motorbike fun!</span></div>

Spent the rest of the day cleaning "soft neck" garlic, this is the kind you tend to see braided. It is only one of 5 varieties that they have there. Once again I realized how labour intensive farming is - gathering and drying bulbs during the previous season to use as seeds for the next crop, prepping the earth, planting, caring for until ready for harvest, harvesting, hanging to dry, cleaning, and then selling - each one goes for $1. Farmers deserve the biggest raise ever, and government health benefits! </span></div>

Recovering from cabin fever, and the bed that feels like it's taken a beating from hibernation 2015. I didn't realize how frozen up I'd become, just like the land, until the great thaw started…..Don't get me wrong, I love all seasons including winter; will miss skating, icicle formations, bufflehead ducks, and the glee with which my dogs whip through a fresh snowfall until next winter rolls around.</span><br />

It's time for colour, and smells, and plants growing outdoors! Time to unfurl and soften. Last Tuesday I saw a small V formation of geese returning with style. My yoga students had to endure many "ruddy goose" poses that night! There's a new excitement and hope in the air, isn't there? </span><br />

Spring sprung from my hands in this last week as a stack of bright new dish towels, and a bevy of homemade body products to slough off winter with. Spring I welcome you with open arms! </span><br />

Straps, balls, and blankets are clean and packed up to go. This coming Tuesday Sept.16th we embark on a new term of Queer & Trans yoga. It's pretty especially awesome to spend 14 weeks with the same folks getting into our groove individually and collectively and I'm really looking forward to it. </span><br />

I now hold my class in a rented community space, we can use the washrooms/change rooms as we wish, and I am welcoming folks into the space rather than receptionist, studio owner, etc.</span></span></i></span></div>

<i><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">It's important to offer practices like yoga to all folks who are interested, or could benefit from it. In other words, yoga should be accessible to all, whether or not they can physically make it to a studio, have the $ to pay for classes, etc. We can all work within the communities we are part of, as well as form collectives with others to learn from each other, peer review, share resources. Teacher trainings would do well to include trainings about diversity and accessibility, rather than focusing on serving the young, healthy and wealthy. We need to reflect on the lack of diversity and accessibility that exists in our current spaces, do our best to educate ourselves and each other, and offer the best that we can, even when it's challenging.</span></i></div>

<i><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">No, but I do encourage folks to avoid postures or practices that don't work for them on a given day, without judgement, as part of learning to listen to one's body and honouring it. And to know that they will not be judged but supported to do so. Yoga is an individual practice, even though we are often practicing in groups.</span></i></div>

If you don't have your own herbs on hand make a trip to the market for some (chives, cilantro, basil, etc). Once the herbs are dried combine them with coarse sea salt in a clean coffee grinder and voila delicious herb salt to sustain you through the cold season. This fall I had the opportunity to take a workshop on working with yoga therapy balls and would like to share with you some of what I learned.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Their primary use is for pain relief, posture correction, and performance improvement; this is done by the individual themselves. Through exploration and self-massage you are able to uncover "blind spots" that may be contributing to dysfunction in the body. These blind spots are outside of our field of awareness, and therefore we don't always use them well (i.e. overuse, underuse, misuse). Proprioception is "the ability to sense the position and location and orientation and movement of the body and its parts." Injured bodies often do not propriocept well, with the exception of pain points.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Rolling the balls over tissue, self-massage, improves our proprioception, and can also decrease pain reception. When you roll on healthy tissue there is an absence of discomfort, whereas rolling on other tissues may feel sensationally intense, flagging that attention is needed. I discovered that there was little unflagged territory on my body as I spent the day working my way through it with the therapy balls. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">There are different balls you can use. When you're choosing your ball remember that "like likes like", so choose something that is similar to the body and won't increase the tissue tension. Here's a <a href="http://www.google.ca/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CCoQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.fasciacongress.org%2F2012%2FAbstracts%2F78_Blyum.docx&ei=_kxUUqezOYzl4AOjlIGAAQ&usg=AFQjCNHNtDhTp5TY3-PSqVsk8yz2MSxGxg&sig2=qRLqaPxqTpUse9QJGnSSYg">link</a> to a scientific study if that's up your alley.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">I like the Yoga Tune Up balls myself, but have also used others that were effective, such as balls from the dollar store. An unpleasant side effect of rubber balls is that often my hands smell and taste rubbery after a practice. I don't recommend tennis balls, they are too hard, and break easily. There is not a single product that will meet every individual's needs, and my intention is not to product promote, so experiment and find what works for you.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Once you've got your balls (hee, hee) there are different ways to apply them. You can rest on them, roll on them, or move your limbs around them. For instance, placing the ball between you and the floor, weight bearing, will usually get you the deepest into the tissue, and is therefore often the most intense. You can switch up the number of balls, and their size to decrease the intensity, two balls are less intense than one, bigger balls less intense than small. A less deep/intense method is to place the ball between you and the wall, leaning into the ball only as much as you like. For highly sensitive areas you can gently press the ball into the skin/tissue and roll it to release fascia/scar tissue.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Ready to start discovering your blind spots, doing self-maintenance on your body, and releasing some "issues from the tissues"? Here's a few guidelines to get you started:</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Personal side note: I have chronic neck tension and pain and short of having a full time massage therapist, living in an epsom salt bath, or going through tubes of Traumeel I've been seeking my own relief. This summer I took a set of balls with me on holidays, where I often experience increased neck pain from different pillows and mattresses. In those instances when I woke up and found myself heading into the pain zone I would work the balls into my yoga practice finding the sources of tension and releasing the discomfort. I was pretty amazed at how well this worked, and to have found a tool that is so portable and budget friendly is pretty cool. Warning to folks living with dogs, do not leave balls on the floor when done using them, image attached :)</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">I'm closing in on my last few days of city life and work. For the month of July I will be on holidays; enjoying my favourite lake and the plants and creatures surrounding it, kayaking with my dog, swimming with my daughter, scrabble playing with my partner, eating yummy food, and enjoying the change of pace this holiday allows me. I am so grateful for every visit I get to this place, and try to never take it for granted. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><br />
This last term my fellow queer & trans yogis and I explored developing a home practice. I think folks expect that instructors have a highly developed version of this. I'm here to share that this is not the case for me. I have a very intermittent, informal home practice. I love it when I do it, miss it when I don't. Sometimes I just can't get myself to the mat, and I struggle with feeling bad about it. So my holiday goal (in addition to above mentioned activities) is to make it to the mat more often, and when I don't to enjoy whatever it is that I'm doing instead (most likely marvelling at the intricacies of the Canadian Shield).</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><br />
